Autumn Rag Wreath

Autumn Rag Wreath

I went to a craft shop recently and spotted an Autumn Rag Wreath on display. I was so taken with it that I had to create one of my own. Using off-cuts of material from my scraps box too meant I was able to use up lots of otherwise waste materials and I just love the warm welcoming effect it has on the front door!

The rag wreath on display in the shop was made solely of felt and it did look stunning. But given I wanted to recycle fabrics, instead of buying new, so I used a mixture of cord, cotton and felt to create mine. I also included some patterned materials, not just plain ones, and love effect it creates.

Here’s how to make your own Autumn Rag Wreath!

Equipment and Materials:

  • Off cuts of materials in red, green, olive, orange, yellow and brown.
  • Pinking Shears
  • Wire wreath ring
  • Conkers, fir cones, paper flowers, beach nut shells, etc along the autumn theme
  • Wire – I used flower arranging wire
  • Long piece of ribbon (approx 60 cm)

Putting together the Autumn Rag Wreath:

Start by cutting the material with pinking shears into strips around 15cm long and 2.5 cm wide. I cut the ends diagonally to create spikes like the ends of leaves.

Tie the strips of material around the wire wreath ring with a simple overhand knot. It will take a lot of strips of material and be sure to squash them up so they are densely packed, until the whole wire wreath ring is filled.

Using the florists wire to tie conkers, fir cones and beech nut shells to the wreath. I used a drill to make a hole straight through each conker. I also added a few paper flowers in autumnal colours. Marigolds, dahlia, crocus, begonia, sunflowers and chrysanthemums are common autumn flowers. I think mine are Chinese Lanterns which are also seasonal. It would also look gorgeous to include some fake red berries, but I didn’t have any of these!

Fluff up your wreath and tie a long ribbon loop around the wire frame to hang it up with. Your Autumn Rag Wreath is now complete!

This looks really affective on your door. I made an Easter wreath and really wanted to make more this year but haven’t got around to it yet. I think I could make this with your helpful instructions.

I’ve shared this with The Penniless Parents Group Facebook community as it’s a fab indoor craft to do on these rainy autumn days and there’s still a reason to get outdoors and collect the conkers!
