Homemade Deodorant That Really Works!

Homemade Deodorant That Really Works!

Before we start, this is not my homemade deodorant recipe. It’s one that I found online here after a bit of scrolling around. I tried it and loved it so I have written this post to share our journey!

When I first tried making Homemade Deodorant I was skeptical that it would work. However, I was also hopeful that I would be proved wrong. I wanted to see if I could find something that would work the majority of the time which would mean I could cut down on buying deodorant, saving the ‘proper’ stuff for special occasions and particularly hot days.

I’ve never been bothered by the ingredients in a shop bought deodorant, in fact I’d never even given it any consideration. But when I started reading around the subject I found that many people were looking for an alternative to putting so many chemicals on their skin. When I checked the ingredients of my own shop-bought deodorant I was surprised to see how many their were. By contrast all these homemade deodorant recipes seemed to contain very few. How could they possibly compare?

I came across one Homemade Deodorant recipe by wellnessmama that I had the ingredients for and promised to be just what I was looking for. I found the post to be really informative with a useful FAQ section. There are also alternatives recipes for men and a simpler coconut oil deodorant

The shea butter recipe is:

  • 3 T Coconut Oil
  • 3 T Baking Soda
  • 2 T Shea Butter
  • 2 T Arrowroot (optional) or organic cornstarch
  • Essential Oils (optional)

I took ‘T’ to mean tablespoons, I am guessing it doesn’t matter so much on the quantity as long as you get the proportions of ingredients right for it to work. Using tablespoons made quite a lot of the product and that made it more difficult for me to store. I think next time I will use teaspoons as the tube I am going to use to store it in holds 45ml. Also, I didn’t have any arrowroot so used cornstarch instead, as suggested.

The essential oil I opted for was Lavender Oil. I love the smell of lavender and its properties include being able to sooth eczema and dry skin. I found this information out on  healthline.com .

Disclaimer: I have no knowledge of how to use essential oils so am not advising the use of any particular oil. Please do your own research for this part, particularly with what quantities to use. Or alternatively you can leave your deodorant unfragranced if you prefer.

Once I’d made the homemade deodorant I put it into a little glass jar and left it to harden in the fridge. The next day I went to use it. The deodorant paste was easy to smooth onto my skin with my fingers, albeit a little bit gritty from the baking soda, but it felt fine. The only problem was it was quite messy getting it out of the pot!

I knew there had to be a way to make the application of the deodorant easier and the solution came to me a week later when I spied my husbands empty deodorant stick in the recycling bin. I took it apart and washed it well (which took ages because washing away deodorant is harder than I first thought!). Then I gently re-melted my pot of deodorant by placing it in a pan of warm water and poured the mixture into the deodorant tube. I clicked all the parts back together, put the lid on and popped it back in the fridge to harden.

The next day I tried my newly made stick of homemade deodorant. The tube worked brilliantly and it went on wonderfully easily! I’ve found that it is also best to allow time for the deodorant to soak in before getting dressed so it doesn’t get on your clothes.

Homemade Deodorant That Really Works!

I’ve been using my homemade deodorant for over 2 weeks now and I am totally convinced it is the right product for me. I have had one day where it didn’t work as well when it was particularly hot and I was doing lots of gardening, but to be honest I don’t think my usual brand would’ve coped with this either. I’m no longer saving my shop-bought deodorant for special days and hot days!

Yesterday I persuaded my husband to try it too. He is very particular about which deodorant he uses after struggling for years to find one that kept him feeling fresh all day. At the end of the day we did the ‘sniff test’ and he was as fresh as at the start of the day! He is now totally converted too.

If you’ve ever considered making your own homemade deodorant, I would say,”Go on give it a go!” It’s easy to make, cheap, it works and it is environmentally friendly. It is definitely a winner in our household!

I’d love to have a go at this, but I too am really particular about which deodorant I use. That’s after years of sweating profusely. I’ll follow your post and hope you are still happy with your deodorant in a few months.
