Homemade Pizza Dough Recipe

For about 12 months now we’ve had a tradition of ‘Pizza Friday’. With my husband and I working full time it was a cop-out for us to buy pre-made pizza from the supermarket and bung it in the oven for 10 minutes. We just wanted something that was minimal fuss as we were both just so shattered by the end of the week. However, it slowly dawned on me that we were wasting an opportunity for some fun, quality family time together and actually shop-bought pizza was an unhealthy and boring choice of meal every week. Our kids still love pizza so we needed to reinvent our Pizza Friday with a Homemade Pizza Dough recipe!

Good quality food has moved higher on our priority list along with quality family time that feed our minds as well as our stomachs. So I decided to start making the pizzas from scratch instead and got the whole family involved too. This is our delicious Homemade Pizza Dough Recipe. I let the children help me make the dough and it’s literally 10-15 minutes of mixing ingredients and then 45 minutes proving time where you can chill out. Then I let the everyone shape their pizza and top them how they want to. The kids love this part as they can choose whatever they want to and change their flavour choice each week. Some weeks it’s simple cheese and tomato, or ham and sweetcorn, chorizo and red onion or even pepper and pepperoni. The combinations are endless! Bingo we have stumbled upon something that has become one of our highlights of the week.

Homemade Pizza Dough Recipe (makes 3 medium sized pizzas):

350g plain flour

1 packet dried yeast

1 teaspoon caster sugar

Pinch of salt

2 tablespoons olive oil

200 ml luke-warm water (like a baby’s bath!)

Method for Homemade Pizza Dough Recipe:

Once you’ve gathered your ingredients you literally just put them all (flour, yeast, sugar, salt, olive oil and water) into a bowl and mix until it forms a dough you can pick up. Alternatively you can put the ingredients into a food mixer to be even speedier.

Now kneed the dough by hand for a few minutes on a flat, floured surface until it forms a smooth dough. Pop it into a bowl lightly greased with olive oil and cover the bowl with a tea towel. Leave it to rise for around 45 minutes. The dough will rise better if you place the bowl somewhere warm.

Once the dough has risen you should kneed again for a few minutes. Then divide into 3 balls and roll them each out thinly and place on baking sheets or tin foil.

To get your dough ready for your chosen toppings, smooth a thin layer of passata over the base and then sprinkle on your choice of cheese. We usually use cheddar or mozzarella. You could sprinkle over some dried mixed herbs too if you fancy it.
