How to make a Scrabble Tile Picture

Scrabble Tile Picture

I’ve loved Scrabble tile pictures ever since they became popular a few years ago. There are many people online who sell them but they are so easy to make yourself and great fun too.

I first made them as Christmas gifts for members of the family but they can be adapted for any number of occasions: a birthday, wedding, christening, retirement present or to celebrate birth of a new child.

Each Scrabble tile picture can be made totally unique and personal to the recipient and as a bonus they are relatively cheap to make. I let my children design their own Scrabble tile pictures for their bedrooms and it was a good way of practicing their spelling too!

I got these imitation wooden Scrabble tiles from Ebay for a couple of pounds. They aren’t perfectly cut but I like them anyway and they add to the homemade feel of the picture. I reused an old frame for this picture project but previously I’ve picked up box frames from Hobbycraft for under £10 and currently they are in the sale so that’s even better!

Here’s my guide to creating a simple and effective Scrabble Tile picture.

Materials and Equipment for your Scrabble Tile Picture:

Scrabble tiles, these can be wooden or plastic

Box frame

Backing paper, you can get lovely patterned ones from craft shops

Glue gun

PVA glue and a paint brush

Bits and pieces to add as additional decoration e.g. buttons, hearts, miniature bunting, etc.

Ribbon

How to make a Scrabble tile picture:

  1. Decide on the words you want to include in your picture. You could do a single word, a sentence or a crossword design like above. The words should be meaningful to the recipient or in keeping with your chosen theme.

2. Decide on any extra embellishments you’d like to include. There are lots of ideas for these types of picture on the internet if you need some extra inspiration. Practice how you would arrange these in your picture until your are happy with the layout and check your design will fit inside the parameters of the frame.

3. Line the back panel of your picture frame with paper. Using a glue gun can be a bit lumpy and it will dry before you’ve been able to cover the sheet, so PVA is best for this job. Spread it on thinly with a paint brush. I then used PVA to glue two pieces of material on to the back ground too.

4. Set out your design for the picture on to the backed panel and using your glue gun stick down the tiles and embellishments one by one.

5. Clip the frame back together and attach a piece of ribbon to hang it up. Your picture is complete! If the picture is a gift it is a nice finishing touch to sign it or to write a message to the recipient on the back and date it.
