To Stay Together or to Split Up?

To Stay Together or to Split Up? Twins Starting School.

Nobody panic, I’m not talking about me and hubby, I’m talking about whether to split my identical twins up or keep them together when they start school in September.

I have always boldly said they would be in separate classes, when anyone asks that’s what I say I am going to do.  We chatted about it before they were born and decided that it was the ‘right thing to do’.  I have read papers on it, and I actually think it is what we will do, but I am far far less certain than I was because we are in the home stretch and it will happen sooner than I am ready for.  It’s now May and they will start school in September, that’s only 4 months away!!

One of my identical twin girls is a little less independent than the other and I am worrying that she will find it too hard. They’ve always been together, usually with our elder daughter, but this last year when our eldest has been at school and they have been in pre-school or at home, they have got closer and closer; tighter and tighter.  In lots of ways that’s why I think I will split them; to give them time to find new friends; time to learn without the other being there; time to realise that whilst they have each other (and always will) they can be on their own and can enjoy that too.

They are very similar in appearance, albeit not personality, and it is time for people to know who is who.  If Eve is in one class and Izzy the other, each of their classmates and their teachers will (for most of the time) know who they are.

I’m worrying about more practical day to day things as well as the emotional and educational issues. There could be 58 birthday invitations in the first few years.  We could be looking at putting on a party for 60 kids!  How do we get 3 children in three different classes to different parties. What about all the separate play dates?

I think I ‘know’ what we are going to do, but it really is starting to weigh on my mind.  I actually wish I hadn’t worked out that it was only 4 months to type this post. It is so very soon!

Ooooooh interesting one. I don’t know what to say but I guess go with your instinct. I have no choice in our school next year (there is only one class) but a boy & girl dynamic might be different away. Good luck lovely xx

Having seen them in action recently, I think you should go with your gut instinct and separate them!

Oh I don’t know, I know friends who have done it both ways so I think it’s really just up to you. I suppose if they didn’t like being apart after the first year you could always ask for them to go into the same class? xx

It must be so tough knowing what to do for the best, I must admit I would find this a really hard decision too x
